ダイアクロンの恐竜ロボプロトタイプ: Diaclone Dinosaur Robo prototypes.

Back in the day before even the sculpting of toys was done on computers, mock ups of proposed toys were made from anything from wax to wood. I won't bore you with long winded rants about the "lost art" of hand making prototypes, but I did have these pics laying about on my computer.

Takara was never been shy about showing off their forthcoming toys in early concept stages. Even now as TakaraTomy, they still love to give a little glimpse into what they are working on. In the early 80's many promotional pieces would use concept art until the final production pieces were done. All five of the Diaclone Dinosaur Robo toys were advertised somewhere in early looks. Most differ in subtle ways, some quite drastically. The following pictures show a photograph of a early working model of the toy enhanced with airbrushed art over it.

Diaclone Dinosaur Robo #3: Brontosaurus

Biggest difference here is the use of the blue colored chest instead of the red chest that the final toy had. The missing right foot may have been a design detail, but more likely the airbrush artists mistake. Overall the design is pretty close to the final production piece.

Diaclone Dinosaur Robo #4: Stegosaurus

While it's not really strong, the chest does show the black color the toy was released with, but the head here is not final. The head used for the mock up was taken from the Microman Camera Robo set. Like the Brontosaurus, this toy really close to it's production design.
