[私のホビー生活] 私を変更した玩具: [My Hobby Life] Toys That Changed Me.

About this time 30 years ago I would have been taking my then current favorite toys to school and been deep into conversation with the other kids who were also discovering the awesomeness of the Transformers and Gobots. I wouldn't be typing this blog post right now without them. For better or worse, these toy lines changed me for life.

I first found out about Transformers in an ad that Marvel ran in an issue of the G.I.Joe comic. When the Transformers comic started I grabbed the first issue (and many subsequent issues). I bought my first Transformers toys before the cartoon aired, those first toys were the Minibots Huffer and Bumblebee. Just a few weeks later I got my first Gobot, Tank. To this day Tank is still my favorite Gobot toy.

Something clicked inside me with these toys. It wasn't so much the comics, or the television shows, it was the toys. The design, the concepts, the sheer genius of the engineering that went into them. As a kid who just missed out on Shogun Warriors and Micronauts, the only robots I really had any great exposure to before Transformers and Gobots were R2-D2 and C-3PO, which to be honest I had always thought at the time were kinda lame. Had I been brought up a few years earlier when Japanese robots hit in the 70's I wonder if I would have been nearly as taken with Transformers and Gobots. Doesn't matter of course, I'm quite happy with how things turned out.
