Cheap Toy Month - Transformers & Gobots piggy-backers finish this out.

If you've ever bought a lot of random Transformers and Gobots, you've probably gotten one of these. If you had aunts or uncles who didn't quite have a clue as to what Transformers and Gobots were, you may also have had some of these. A plethora of transforming robots toys started to hit shelves in late 1984 and most were bootlegs or originals that just couldn't reach the high bar created by Takara and Bandai. Here's a look at the MC Toys product that they felt could get in on the transforming robots boom.

Cheap Toy Month - Joe and Barbie these are not.

This is what your typical flea market, dollar store type seller of the 80's would have had tons of. Cheap crappy Barbie and G.I.Joe knock offs. While this ad isn't flashy, or have anything really cool at all, it does show that even in 1985, among the Transformers, the real G.I.Joes, Star Wars, there was tons of crap. The toy market was fiercely competitive then, just as it is now, but somehow these fly by night companies still can get their product to the marketplace.

Cheap Toy Month - My gift to you, a sparkling heart.

Nearing the end of the December daily Cheap Toy Month posts. This ad marks the 3rd time the robot in the center has appeared, and each time by a different company. And of course again he's surrounded by piles of crap toys. I did have a similar small text block set that you see in the top photo, but mine had Japanese kana on one side, numbers on another, food pics on a side, and a Hello Kitty puzzle on the last side. I kinda wish I still had that.

Cheap Toy Month - Mattel who?

Back in 1985 I wasn't a big fan of 5" scale action figures, but I knew of them because my brothers had quite a few. Clearly I didn't know that there was only one place to go for them. While I think the figures in the ad shown here are kind of cool (okay, sorry, maybe not Judah), I'm pretty sure I would have bought some Masters of the Universe toys instead. I'm not gonna squash their confidence though, and if they feel they are seriously the only place to go, hey, awesome, you guys are real go-getters.

What more is there to say? Enjoy the crap toys, there's a Microman boot, a few knock off He Man guys and a Daitarn3 battery operated toy.

Cheap Toy Month - Retro Robot Deja Vu.

This ad was picked to highlight again that these types of companies not only steal name brands and likenesses, they steal from each other. Several of the toys shown here have been in previous ads that I posted. Still cool things, well, okay, most of the stuff in this ad is junk. I still like the bootleg robots though.

Cheap Toy Month - 5POA KO, amazingly advanced.

A little something on Christmas Day, and very little at that. Back to the bootlegs with a few Shogun Warrior Japanese super robot knock-offs and some junky friction powered cars. These Shogun boots are one of the toys that kind of appears in the exact same form from several different companies this month.

Cheap Toy Month - Nasta and Nice.

Another company that actually licensed products instead of just stealing them. I've owned a few of their Transformers toys, and liked them quite a lot. I don't think their coolest products are highlighted here, but that seems to be a running theme in these ads.

Cheap Toy Month - Macross Machine.

This is the worst ad I will post this month. It features 80% junk. The only redeeming thing here, is actually pretty cool, a gumball machine full of Macross bootleg keshi and mini models. I vividly remember these types of machines hitting stores right around the time Transformers made their way onto shelves. I think I still have a bootleg Gobots kit I got from one back n the 80's.

Cheap Toy Month - The taste of plastic.

Another toy company that went ahead and bucked the system, using new and licensed characters. I know the name Blue Thunder, but have never seen the movie or the t.v. show they tried to spin off of it. One other thing I don't know, how does thunder taste exactly? Now as for excitement. I know a little about that taste. Nightmare Warriors, Bugmen of Insecta and other random cheap toys including Marvel's Secret Wars novelties are not it for me. However, Nightmare Warriors could have been quite cool to me as a kid. Isn't there some remake out there now? May need to look into that.

Cheap Toy Month - Masters of the Crystar Universe.

The Action Team? The Warriors? Bendable Knights? Just how many damn names do these things have? How about another name, the Crystar Wannabes. And what's with the guy on the right doing his best to steal Skeletor's look? Not sure he's pulling it off. They shifted from one of my favorite toys fetishes in the Crystar line, clear plastic, to another in this boot line, chrome. Sadly these boots are horrible, but don't worry! It seems they can still maybe catch a buyer or two with the amazingly bland 6WD 7"! Is that really the title? The Six Wheel Drive 7 Inch? Hmm.

Cheap Toy Month - What? No Godzilla?

When I saw this ad I thought, oh cool, a company not really bootlegging He-Man, but just making add on toys to play with them. Great! Then I noticed it was Imperial toys and was immediately disappointed they were not advertising they cheap crappy little Godzilla figures that sat around in toy stores for most of the 80's.

Still like these crazy beasts for use with Master of the Universe.

Transformers Combiner Wars: Buy or no buy?

For me? It's a no buy. Overall anyhow.

Not really digging this idea. Seems very, I don't know, very simple? Amateurish? It's been done not too long ago. It's something, but it's not something I really like. It could be huge though I guess, opinions vary so much. The whole line isn't a loss of course, you have Powerglide which you can check out at Transformers Square One. But this Huffer, it's sad.

Transformers Huffer Combiner Wars Takara Hasbro new Transformers 2015 Optimus Prime redeco

I guess in Hasbro's eyes Huffer just doesn't deserve a unique toy these days. It's either a repaint of some other toy, or designed to be generic enough to be a Decepticon if needed. Even his 2 Kre-O figures really don't get it right. There is of course a few 3rd party toys, but I just have not gotten into that whole mess just yet. Sad since I like Huffer so much.

Cheap Toy Month - King of the Kmart toy aisle.

This is one of the maybe 5 ads I had collected from 1985* that I really actually liked a lot. I'm not a shamed to say it, my family shopped at Kmart. I also had a few of the toys in this ad. We were poor, that's just life. But that won't stop me from seeing that Remco really played close to the knock-offy cheap end of things. ZyBots? They were and still are crap. But they have some charm to them. And I can't even begin to explain how much I wanted Mantech toys, even those too were really low on the quality level. Every now and then I scope out auctions for some Mantech stuff and even at maybe $5-$10 sealed in box for a figure, it still seems expensive.

Cheap Toy Month - Lean, mean and green.

I was kind of surprised that only one company in the mix offered little green army men, but happy to see them. I know that my brother had the set shown at the top of the page. I'm sure they all stole from each other and the originals were probably produced far earlier than 1985.

Cheap Toy Month - No bang for your buck.

It's like they didn't even try. What else can you say about what looks like a red headed He-Man, nearly nude, riding what couldn't possibly be a battle ready cycle? And those futuristic U.S. Air Force spaceships? Eh...actually those are not too bad, but the skintastic sexy cycle man trio need to go away forever.

Cheap Toy Month - He-Man, Action Force and Mr T! And licensed!?

Aside from a very few instances where there was a name brand company issuing some bits of product, you really don't see what you see here below. Actual licensed products! It's been pretty much unheard of so far in my Cheap Toy Month posts. The Masters of the Universe figural pencil toppers are quite cool, I'dactually liekto track those down (cheaply). The Action Force stamp sets is likely pre-A Real American Hero G.I.Joe characters, so kind of little interest to me. And a Mr T pencil case? Well that speaks for itself right?

Cheap Toy Month - I think I like this, kind of.

I don't know for sure, but seeing as how I kinda think these shipping/dock toys are cool as an adult, I feel confident in saying I'd have wanted to play with them as a kid. I was a big Tonka vehicles kid, and loved the LEGO town sets, so these cheap shipper toys would have worked well. The tea set and beauty care toys, probably not as much.

Cheap Toy Month - Battery operated Jeeg, Daitarn 3 and Stormtroopers...nice!

Here we have an ad that is comprised of 75% crap and some cool battery operated robots. And these particular battery operated toys seem to be found in several of the ads I have, so the knock off companies don't just "borrow" from the big guys but also amongst themselves. The Kotestsu Jeeg looking robot kinda strikes me as the coolest of the bunch. I do like the blue and yellow guy next to him, as well as the silver Star Wars Stormtrooper.

Cheap Toy Month - Chap Mei, cheap toys going the distance!

A few years back I had only just heard of Chap Mei. It was one of several down times for Hasbro and their G.I.Joe brand. In it's absence, a large number of Joe collectors bought up cheap alternatives to Joe. One company was making junk figures, but so-so to almost cool vehicles. It's the vehicles that attracted collectors, and it was Chap Mei that produced them. Rewind even further back, and we see this:

Star Wars Han Solo Gatchaman hong kong knock offs toys cheap asian bootlegs robots fakes 1980s retro toys vintage KOs

Star Wars knock off toy , Star Wars visuals on junk sword, Battle of the Planets visuals on camera toy, Gatchaman pistol...and a toy air conditioner! What?

While Chap Mei may have captured the pocket books of collectors in the early 2000's, I doubt they would have been as successful with a Han Solo pistol knock off. But who knows, there was a time when Star Wars toys were absent from store shelves, and maybe this would have been bought up too. I guess the real story here should that Chap Mei was even a company still producing toys 20 years after this ad was published.

Cheap Toy Month - An innovation in Takara toys, by way of HK bootleg.

Funny how a company can say they've hit a new stride in innovative toys when the original item actually appeared on shelves five years earlier, in another country, by a different company. Amazing how that works.

Here's another split ad, the top features Robotank Transformers, which are actually Takara Choro-Q toys of Votoms and Dougram characters. Below you have the dollar store mainstay, the magic feeding bottle. Give it to whoever made this simple toy first, cause while they may not be around, their product is.

Cheap Toy Month - When you have no original ideas, steal from Star Wars.

This ad is pretty bad. Just absolutely uninteresting, hell even the knock off of what I can only guess is a Star Wars Empire Strikes Back MLC-3 mini rig doesn't hold my attention. I have another 200 ads that will not be getting published here cause they are just like this one, boring. I think the only reason this one made the cut was that it is probably Star Wars related.

Sorry to waste your time. :P

Cheap Toy Month - A name among the nameless.

Masudaya joins the party. Maybe not a household name for toys in the US, they did have their share of success in Japan. One of my favorite toy lines came from Masudaya, the transforming Alphabots. Those are nt in this ad sadly, it's just a bunch of junk. I want to say the Cruiser Robot had an actual release alongside Transformers in the West, but can't recall.
