Hasbro Super Hero Mashers: Iceman

I was intrigued when I first got a glimpse at the Mashers assortments of figures from Hasbro last year. This is in a sense something collectors have been begging Hasbro to do for years, crate a line of figures that cross over into other brands. Sure I think they had hoped for the 3&3/4 to 4inch scale, but I guess this is a start. In my usual manner I picked these up off the shelves, carried them about and ultimately left them at the stores for months. I like quite a few of the initial figures from both the marvel and Transformers lines, but it wasn't till Iceman hit that I really felt I had to get one. Sure enough, I wasn't going to buy at normal retail price, and when both Meijer and Target each had sales Iceman was nowhere in sight. My search kept up for a few months. So this week, on whim to scope out a Five Below store, I found the Hasbro Super Hero Mashers there. And to my delight, one last Iceman remained. At $5, half of normal retail, it was a bargain.

The toys and their packages share a consistent design element across both the Marvel and Transformers assortments. The only downside I've seen is that at several stores employees tend to stock them in any order, Marvel on Transformers pegs, and Transformers in Marvel shelf placings. Not a huge deal of course. The packages do a great job of highlighting the toy, and the action features and interchangeable gimmick on the back.

The figure is a piece of art, a bit of clear plastic brilliance. It's no surprise to my that the translucent figure would be the first that really committed me to a purchase. It also helps that I just like Iceman overall. Another little thing not entirely connected to the toy by design is that I love the Crystar vibe yo get. I have seen another collector begin to do a Crytar custom, and I may try one too if I can grab another few $5 Mashers.

The sculpt is good and works for Iceman, however I don't know that it's one that is strictly for use only with him. I could easily see a Luke Cage figure out of this body if a few limbs were altered.

On top of the whole limbs swap feature, Iceman comes with 1 accessory, an Ice Saber which doubles as a blast Ice Fist. Depending on if you have him hold the piece right where it takes on life as an Ice Saber, or plug it into the open fist as a shooting projectile, it's a neat little add on.

Overall these figures are fun when their gimmicks and features are in use, but as normal action figures they fall a bit short. Because of the way the toys have to be made, pegs that hold limbs on are a bit loose and easily slip apart when posing and playing with the figures. None of the bits are too small, but I could see heads going missing the easiest. So far, and I haven't really see what's on the horizon, I'd love to see a bit more variety among the figures and would really love to see someone like Firestrom make it into the line so I can make a Spider Friends trio. But until that day I'll enjoy this guy, and hopefully pickup a few  more.
