A Look At My Super-Turkey-Black-Cyber-Week Buys. (Star Wars Imaginext DC Power Rangers)

While some collectors are now showing off what they got for Christmas, I'm only just getting around to posting about what I picked up for Black Friday week.

To say stores got way out of hand this year with their sales and promotions at the end of November would be an understatement. They went totally bonkers. A car dealer in my area started Black Friday sales in September for crying out loud. Many stores offered up in-store Thanksgiving Day deals up to 3 days early online. A few places let you purchase Black Friday items via their websites on Thursday. At least 2 stores I frequent had different things on sale each day from Wednesday to Saturday. For a bargain shopper like myself, it's was a crazy wonderful and yet super easy shopping experience this year. I paid about half of normal retail costs in nearly all cases. I seriously made out like a bandit.
スターウォーズ Star Wars oversized figures JAKKS ダース・ベイダー
Toys R Us Normal Retail $79.99 My Price: $29.00 (shipped free)

I really like the Star Wars oversized figures that JAKKS puts out. The sculpting and detailing is great, and the price can't be beat by anyone else doing large scale figures. This set is a Toys R Us exclusive and sold for $79.99 from the time it came out. And while some collectors may bitch about the price, it's the scale, accessories included and just overall look of the toys that have people foaming at the mouth and pissing themselves in anger. Why though? Thanks to a Thanksgiving sale dropping this down to $59.99 and an added 50% off for Black Friday I got the 4 pack for $29.99 shipped free. I have never seen the main figure here I wanted, the Vader, sold singly so I jumped on this deal. I have wanted the Stormtrooper as well and passed on a Rebels 2pack last summer. The Luke and Tusken Raider were exclusives to this set for a short time, both now being sold again in Force Awakens packages.
スターウォーズ Star Wars Playskool Galactic Heroes ダース・ベイダー Jedi Force
Toys R Us/Meijer Normal Retail $95.00 My Price: $55.00 (shipped free)

Staying with Star Wars we have the new Playskool Galactic Heroes toys. Or not so new really. Galactic Heroes are the re-branding of the Star Wars Jedi Force, which in turn were made up of vehicles and playsets from the original Galactic Heroes line but with articulated figures instead of small 0poa pvc figures. This new line has been tugging at my wallet for some time. I guess all I needed was a great sale to finally push me over the edge and get into it. The AT-AT was just over 25% off, and the smaller sets are 50% off. So not bad. As you may notice I am only buying the Imperial Forces, and will need to look for the now discontinued Jedi Forces AT-ST at inflated pricing, or wait for a re-issue. And it's Hasbro, a re-issue/re-use is super likely.

Kohls Normal Retail $159.98 My Price: $63.00 (shipped free)

I had never bought the original Imaginext DC Super Heroes Batcave toy because Kohls has continued to sell them since about when it came out 7 years ago. When a new darker grey color variations began to pop up in stores I figured I better act quick. Thankfully Kohls wanted to help me out and put together a couple sales for their Batcave sets and I was able to get both the old and new colors for about $31.00 each. I think this first Batcave is still the best one they've made of the now 4 & 1/2 versions.

Kohls Normal Retail $97.00 My Price: $31.00 (shipped free)

This is how you Kohls. I got all 3 of these items for less than just the boxset was normally priced. These were impulse buys to get the toys in alternate packaging. Well, and I needed the Kilowog Green Lantern because he has a slight variation in his uniform design.

Target/Meijer Normal Retail $118.00 My Price: $60.00 (shipped free)

Not only was I able to pick up the original Imaginext Batcaves, but I also got the most recent Transforming Batcave as well. This was bought at Target on sale with a extra bit off with a coupon. It's a bit fiddly, but comes with a very cool Joker figure. My last big oversized purchase of the week was the Imaginext Power Rangers Morphin Megazord. This set stands as the base, and combined Zord mode of the non-transforming vehicles sold in the Imaginext line. It's a huge toy filled with little exciting bits.

Kohls/Meijer Normal Retail $100.00 My Price: $51.10 (shipped free)

I also picked up all the normal sized Zords and lucked out with finding the new White Ranger Tiger Zord as well. I also grabbed the last couple of figure packs I needed. With another purchase I just made this week, I'm in need of one 1 more toy to finish out the Imaginext Power Rangers line.

If I had to pick out one item from my sale hunting as a favorite, it's the Imaginext White Ranger and Tigerzord. I actually went and picked up a second one the following week I was so impressed with it.

December Hauls Are Typically Less Impressive. (Imaginext Diaclone G.I.Joe)

At this point in December I really have my mind set on spending money on others, so what I take in for myself is a bit on the light side. A couple deals sprung up last week that I figured I'd jump on, 2 in store, the other online. My last pick-up from the week was actually bought back in early November, but just arrived on a slow boat from the U.K., so I'm counting that one here too.
Imaginext DC Super Friends Hall of Justice comics アメコミ ダイアクロン バットマン Diaclone Robotbase batman g.i.joe
For weeks now the only place to buy the new Fisher-Price Imaginext DC Super Friends Hall of Justice was through Amazon online. Then Meijer stores started stocking them just over a week ago. They've also been having various coupon offerings and percentage off sales. I got the Hall of Justice on a day they were offering 20% off a single toy. It brought the cost down to $24, so not bad. It's a fun little toy, and while I don't particularly like the Superman figure, I do like the Batman figure it comes with.

The other Imaginext item in the picture is a Walmart exclusive back from the early days of the DC Super Friends brand. It's a re-color of a previously sold ATV toy and a re-issue of the Batman from the Batcycle single figures assortment. In terms of excitement, this toy rates pretty low. But being such a early toy, and a store exclusive, they can skew a bit high in asking cost. Not that I'm saying it's justified, it's just a sad fact of the greed filled hobby we're part of. his one popped up on auction at a reasonable price with free shipping so I jumped on it right away. I know I'm being a little negative about it, but I do like it and am glad to have gotten it.

Next up was a bit of a surprise buy. First let me  say that I am almost always late to the party when it comes to people selling bits on Facebook. I am constantly missing little things I would like to buy. When someone offered up an assortment of items from the Takara SF Land SCF line I got a little excited. There was a complete "build a figure" Diaclone Robotbase and at an amazing price. Now I had one of this back when they first came out, and ended up selling it for pretty cheap, along with my normal Robotbase. I know I probably won't ever have a real Robotbase back in my collection soon so I was amped to maybe have this little guy back. Even with the international shipping cost added in it was a bargain, selling for about 1/3 the price I've seen in Japan. If you follow GanguStars you may recall seeing my old toy here.

Last up from last week, a G.I.Joe 2 pack from Hasbro's odd G.I.Joe 50th Anniversary offerings. I'll leave the "odd" comment as it is because I just don't want to go into a long rant about it. This here is a re-color of the "Ultimate" Cobra Commander, and it's just as awesome a figure as that one, except that they didn't chrome the head. It's more of a shiny silver paint, and this may actually be for the best. The chrome plating was causing quite a bit of breakage in the original figure so even though the look was great, it isn't worth possible damage to the figure. Normally I'd be a little bummed to see that this is of course just the same lazy re-use of a Cobra Commander that Hasbro seems to always do, the black uniform version. This time however they at least spruced him up with some, IMHO, nice red accents. Sure there's all kinds of forum posts I could link to blasting this look, but I like it. The Shipwreck figure that also comes in his 2 pack is a total throw away for me. Not really going to throw it in the trash, but it's definitely not staying in my collection. At this point I'm really just collecting Cobra Commander toys, which makes me sad that I won't have the Old Snake figure in my collection. Because like I said before, greed is rampant in our hobby.

Where Do Your Toys Go When Undisplayed? (Transformers Battle Beasts)

1997 Beast Wars Battle Beasts Takara Transformers おもちゃ タカラ トランスフォーマー ビーストフォーマー hasbro
I've been wanting to do a visual look at my collection being displayed over the last 20 years but just haven't gotten very far with it. One thing that did catch my eye when looking over pics was how I was storing things when they were not up for display. I don't take great care of a lot of my stuff, or at least that's what I thought when viewing things through the measure of how others have stored their items.

For instance, take a look at my Battle Beasts collection. I've had these Beasts stored in this same 1986 McDonalds Happy Meal pail since I bought them. Sure I've bought others Beasts and Beastformers that didn't go in here, but some new things did. I wonder how many others just drop Crystal Killer Fish figures into a bin for storage. Most would think I'm crazy for just keeping my Beasts like this, especially the $60-$70 Killer Fish.

I think what it comes down to is that these are my toys. These are not my investments. I want to enjoy these and if I need to buy more to replace a broken item, then I can. I am far from an anti-MISB guy, because as an artist the box can be just as eye pleasing in design as the toy. But I can't accept the toys as investments idea, and maybe that's one reason I keep so much of my stuff in storage as I do.
